Hey friend,
I'm so NERVOUS! Tomorrow I am running my first half marathon EVER!
I've been training hard with early morning runs before the sun comes up and I think I might just be able to pull this thing off ๐ฌ

You may not know this, but I only started running last summer โ and it went HORRIBLY. The longest I managed was 4-5 miles, and I had so many issues with my feet and ankles that I had to quit.
I'm so glad I decided to try again this year and learn how to fix my running form, because I feel great heading into 13.1 miles tomorrow. My goal is simply to finish, running the whole thing at around 12 minutes per mile. I'll be thrilled with that.
Just a reminder: struggling with something doesn't mean it isn't for you. It might just mean you need some help and direction to learn the right approach โ and then everything unlocks. ๐ช๐ป
Alright, now onto this week's Practical Health Journal...
I'm Addicted To This High Protein Snack ๐ง๐ฆฌ
One of my favorite things in the world to eat is summer sausage and hard cheese. SO dang good.
The problem? Most summer sausage and cheese blocks are loaded with fat and calories โ so much so that it's hard to justify the treat.
But I found two products that, paired together, let me enjoy this snack anytime with far fewer calories and way more protein.

For the summer sausage: a brand called ICON that makes theirs from elk, bison, and venison. They still use pork, but combining it with those leaner meats drops the fat and raises the protein significantly โ just 50 calories and 9-11g protein per serving.
Then I pair it with Kraft Big Protein Cheese Snacks, high protein cheese blocks that come in mild cheddar and my favorite, pepper jack.
When I want a high protein snack around 200 calories, I do two servings of the summer sausage with about half a cheese block and...bam. So dang good.

I found the Kraft Big Protein Cheese Snacks at Walmart, and you can purchase a sampler 4 pack of the ICON Summer Sausage with 4 different variations from Amazon.
If you love summer sausage and cheese...give this combo a try. I think you'll love it, especially since it comes without the guilt and excessive fat calories.
Finallly...A Sparkling Water I Actually Like ๐
I've tried all sorts of sparkling waters over the years โ La Croix, Bubly, Ice โ and none of them hit for me. They're either too bland, too carbonated, too bitter, or they taste like I'm drinking perfume ๐คฎ
Then, while treating the kids to a squishy-drop shopping moment at Five Below, I got thirsty, spotted a can of Liquid Death in the cooler, and the flavor caught my eye: Mt. Death.
I'm a Mountain Dew Zero Sugar guy, so I gave it a shot โ and much to my surprise, I really liked it. I've since tried Severed Lime and Cherry Obituary, and now I'm low-key addicted.
Here's what they've got going for them:
1๏ธโฃ They nail the balance between flavor and carbonation better than any brand I've tried.
2๏ธโฃ The branding and can design are genuinely cool. Don't act like that doesn't matter ๐

3๏ธโฃ They have a TON of flavors, many modeled after your favorite pop โ Mt. Dew, Dr. Pepper, root beer (though I didn't love that one).
4๏ธโฃ The cans look like beer cans, so people think you're drinking a beer. If you're trying to be social at a party without the alcohol, these are a solid choice.

5๏ธโฃ They're a satisfying way to cut back on energy drinks and drink more water in a very clean way.
I'm probably late to the party, but I highly recommend Liquid Death. It's officially on my menu of zero calorie beverages ๐ง
Thai Fried Rice You Can Eat & Still Lose Weight

Thai food is my favorite on the planet.
A few years back I was at a local Thai restaurant eating one of my favorite dishes โ Thai shrimp fried rice โ and while paying my bill, I asked an employee if they knew where I could get authentic Thai cooking lessons.
Next thing I knew, the owner and head chef was walking me back into her kitchen to show me step by step how to make it. So cool!
This recipe is slightly modified since a few of her ingredients aren't easy to find at your local Walmart, but it's very close and tastes amazing. Enjoy!
Single Serving
399 calories | 52g protein (52%) | 43g net carbs (43%)
Ingredients
- 1/2 Cup Steamed Jasmine Rice
- 8 Oz. Shrimp
- 1 Tbsp Soy Sauce, Tamari Sauce, Liquid Aminos, or Seasoning Sauce (Use Golden Mountain Seasoning Sauce for the most authentic Thai taste)
- 1 Tsp Fish Sauce
- Minced Garlic
- 1-2 Tbsp Stevia Powder
- 1 Medium Onion Chopped
- 1 Poblano Pepper Chopped (Use any pepper you prefer)
- 1 Cup Chicken Bone Broth
- Salt + Pepper to taste
Instructions
1. If using a rice cooker, add 1 cup dry jasmine rice, 1 cup chicken bone broth, and 1-2 tablespoons minced garlic, then start the cooker. The garlic infuses the rice with flavor from the beginning, and the bone broth adds protein. Once cooked, measure out ยฝ level cup and set aside. (Using instant microwave rice? Cook it, then measure out ยฝ level cup.)
2. While the rice cooks, put about 8 oz. of frozen shrimp in a colander and run warm water over it for a few minutes to thaw. Set aside.
3. Spray a skillet with cooking spray and add the cooked rice, onion, peppers, and minced garlic. Cook on medium to medium-high, stirring together.
4. Once the veggies start to soften, add the thawed shrimp and stir it all together. Salt generously and add pepper here. Let it cook, flipping the shrimp after 2-3 minutes.
5. When the shrimp are cooked through, push everything to one half of the skillet. Add your soy sauce and fish sauce directly onto the bare hot surface and let it bubble and sear for 5-10 seconds, then mix everything together in the seared sauces.
Fish sauce smells HORRIBLE and will taste horrible if you don't cook with it properly. Searing it with the soy sauce on the hot skillet before mixing removes that ultra-fishy taste and leaves the authentic Thai umami flavor you love from restaurants.
6. Add red pepper flakes to taste if you like it spicy, and enjoy!
