- Podcast relaunch...The Practical Health Podcast
Hey friend,
Just 8 days out from running my first half marathon EVER 🤯
Honestly, I never thought this would be possible for me. Not after last years series of ankle injuries and other challenges.
But here we are, and it's a perfect reminder not to let our setbacks get in the way of our comebacks.
Setbacks happen, but if you keep trying and keep learning you can do amazing things .
First goal is this half marathon, and the I think the next goal is a 50k baby ultra marathon 😬
Be bold...set goals that scare you, and get after them.
That's the spice of life 💪🏻
Alright, now onto this week's Practical Health Journal...
So...Real Good Foods Makes Corndogs Now 🤭
I'll be honest...this was not on my bingo card for "healthy" food product releases, but you know what...I'm here for it.

They have thus far released 2 variations...a Classic Corndog and a Crispy Battered Corndog.
Both are lower in calories and higher in protein by far than an average corndog, mostly because they use a chicken frank inside the corndog.
I expected the Classic to be better macros then the Crispy Battered version just because "crispy battered" sounds a little more naughty than classic does, but interestingly enough the Crispy Battered Corndog is actually higher protein and better overall from a macro standpoint.
The Classic Corndog comes in at 170 calories with 15g protein...so 35% protein overall if you are counting macros.
The Crispy Battered Corndog is 170 calories with 18g protein, so a little over 42% protein.
I opted for the higher protein option, and they are really good!
Corndogs are not my thing, but they are GOOD, so if you love a good corndog these are great options that are surprisingly high in protein.
Pair one of these with a lean protein and that's a solid meal right there!
This 2 Piece Home Gym Setup Is All You Need

A couple of years ago Joani and I decided to build out a super nice home gym in our garage, and we invested in several pieces of equipment and made it into a super nice, if not very pricy, space.
We love it...but if I am being honest 90% of our workouts are done with 2 simple pieces of equipment.
If I could go back and do it again, I'd save probably 10k that I spent on all the other equipment I bought and just get these two pieces because you can do SO MUCH with just these two:
A set of adjustable dumbbells and a simple adjustable bench.
That's it.
Adjustable dumbbells can be found in a pretty wide price range as can benches.
I chose to get a really nice set of dumbbells and a SUPER cheap bench.
The adjustable dumbbell set I use and love is the Nuobell 5-80lb set.
That means the instantly adjust from 5 pounds per hand all the way up to 80 pounds per hand. They also sell a 5-50lb set if you don't need to go that heavy.
If you're a female you'd probably be good with the 5-50lb set unless you want to really push your strength numbers eventually.
If you're a couple buying for a guy and a gal, then I'd recommend the 5-80lb set, or even their 5-100 pound set if you're going to be chest pressing over 160 pounds at once.
The 5-50 pound set can be had for around $599, their 5-80lb set for around $769, and their 5-100 pound set for around $999.
And then I just bought this super cheapo adjustable bench off of Amazon and it's been just fine. I'll probably upgrade someday, but this works for now.
So for somewhere between $700 and $1100 you can have two simple gym pieces that open up enough exercises that you could get super fit and never need anything else.
I can also vouch for Nuobell's customer service as my nephew dropped one of my dumbbells really hard and messed up the interal adjustment mechanism and they sent me an entirely new handle for free. 🆓
Can't beat that 🤷🏻♂️
Relaunching The Podcast:
The Practical Health Podcast
I've dabbled here and there with podcast episodes, but I haven't been super consistent with it.
I'm challenging myself to commit to adhering as closely to a weekly upload schedule as possible and relaunching under the name Practical Health w/ Matt Portwood.
The podcast is different from my YouTube videos in 2 ways:
- I am not editing it at all. It's just raw, unfiltered, authentic Matt Portwood. You're going to get all the stutters, throat clearing, and mistakes...it just is what it is.
- This is my outlet to talk about all sorts of topics from personal growth and development, life lessons, mental health, etc. in addition to all the usual sustainable health and fitness stuff you are used to.
I am relaunched OFFICIALLY so it is now available on YouTube, Apple Podcasts, and Spotify.
If you want the video version you'll want to go to Spotify or YouTube for now.
Episode 1 is 5 Mindsets To Program Your Brain For Weight Loss and it's life now. Enjoy :)
